Create Multi-Line Collage Paper Fast Using a Simple Tool

Now and then, I stumble on an art tool that surprises me in the best possible way. Today, I’m sharing one that completely delighted me, and though it’s technically meant for hair dye, I’ve found a much more exciting use for it – to create multi-line collage papers FAST! This simple, yet ingenious tool is called a root comb applicator!

I first discovered this idea from another artist on Instagram (special thank you to @sharecestudios for showing me how to create this on her posts), and I knew I had to try it. Let’s just say it was love at first squeeze.

I started by pre-mixing my paints to match my usual limited palette, phthalo blue-green shade, hansa yellow light, and quinacridone magenta, although the last color was not used for this demo.  I used Nova paint, but any pourable acrylic paint will work. Just make sure your paint is fluid enough to flow easily through the applicator.

Once your bottles are filled, shake them gently and get ready for major fun. You just squeeze and let the paint flow. The applicator creates beautiful multiple lines in one go, and the design possibilities are endless, from swirls and scribbles to zigzags and layered marks; anything goes.

It feels like child’s play, but the results are far from elementary. Many of the designs have a lovely dimensional quality once they dry, and they’re sure to elevate any collage pieces just by adding these simple marks. What I especially love about this method is how quick it is. In under 15 minutes, I had created a massive stack of papers. And yes, my studio floor was covered in drying sheets… and I didn’t want to stop!

Working with the Finished Papers

Although these designs appear chaotic at first glance, I rarely use the full sheet in a collage. Instead, I cut them down into smaller, intentional sections that become stunning collage elements. Even the pieces I thought looked like a mess at first turned out to have hidden gems tucked inside them. I’ll use my hands to block out small areas to find the parts I love, and those are the ones that end up in my work.

A Few Creative Ideas to Try

  • Use old documents, envelopes, or vintage papers as your base.

  • Experiment with different line weights by adjusting the pressure as you squeeze.

  • Combine colors within a single applicator for unexpected blends (like my apple green!)

  • Layer scribbles for wild, abstract marks that add energy to your collage.

This project was fun, fast, and unexpectedly beautiful. I hope you give it a try, and if you do, I’d love to see what you create!
